My Kindle has become my good buddy the last four and a half days since the freak snow storm last Saturday. After sitting in the dark, cooking on the camp stove and washing in a bucket, I was more then ready to disappear into a good book. This time around, my time machine, AKA Kindle, took me back to 1950's Mississippi. (If you are wondering I did just have to spell Mississippi out loud to get it correct!) I was the investigator to the brutal beating and kidnapping in the book Prenumbra by Carolyn Haines.
The book opens on a hot summer afternoon as a mother, Marlena and her child,Suzanna, are waiting in the car. They are waiting for Marlena's lover to come take them away for the afternoon. As the story progresses, it starts to be told through the eyes of the child. A few more pages in we meet, Jade, half sister to Marlena and also a mixed race women who was raised by a black couple. She is the town hair dresser and also the beautician at the funeral home. It is she who sits by Marlena's side in the hospital after the attack. it is also Jade who gets herself caught up in the investigation into the brutal attack and kidnapping.
As the investigation heats up, sheriff Frank Kimble comes onto the scene. He is a small town cop born and raised in Drexel, who has fought in WWII, only to return home and head the police department. to some of the folks in town, he has big city ways that do not sit well. Frank enlists Jade's help in getting Marlena to speak about the attack. Along the way together they go through twists and turns.
As I got deeper and deeper into the book, I started to pick sides. One moment I was feeling sorry for Jade. The next I wanted to snuggle up close to Frank. Along the way, we meet Marlena's mother, her husband, and her best friend. Pasts are revealed and secrets are kept. Lies are written and truths are told. It is not to the very end of the book, that the whole story comes together. When it came together for me,I was startled and shocked.
I definitely want to see more from Ms.Haines. She is a very well written author and has no problem taking me away from the here and now, only to drop me into another time and place.

As the Crickets Churp...,
Aaahhh...Fall. Its everywhere. I can smell it when I leave for work in the morning and I can smell it right before I go to bed at night. I cant wait till I can pack up all my summer things, get out my sweaters, light a fire in the wood stove and curl up on the chair with a good book. If the book is good enough I just might stay there all day.
How can you not enjoy all of the good things fall has to offer? Candy corn, crisp mornings and cool evenings, county fairs, beautiful colored mums, and almost anything apple you can think of. The crisp mornings just make you want to find a good cup of coffee, sneak out of the house onto the porch and enjoy the morning as the sun warms the day. And as you may have guessed a "good " book accompanies me as well. There's nothing like it. Go ahead..try it and then tell me what you think. I double dog dare you. I bet you'll come back for more..and more then once.
Speaking of books, this blog was designed just for that purpose..to share with everyone some of the good books I have recently read or have read in the past. Now, before I get to far ahead, not everyone will like my weekly selections. Its okay I'm sure I wouldn't like all that you have read either. So without farther due here is the selection for this week, straight from the Kindle: The Choice by Suzanne Woods.
If you have ever read Beverly Lewis,Ms. Woods' writing style is very much the same. This is the first book in the Lancaster County Secrets series. The main character is Carrie Miller, a young Amish women, torn between staying with her faith and leaving it to follow her heart. Her beau, Solomon Reihl, leaves his faith to play minor league baseball. Through out the book he keeps resurfacing to complicate Carrie's life. While dealing with the death of her father and a very controlling step mother, she devises a plan which also includes her brother,Andy.
As the book continues, two brothers are introduced, Daniel and Abel Miller. Daniel has never had a thought to leave his faith. His brother, Abel, has left and now returns to the family. The plot of the book centers around Carrie, Abel and Solomon. Carrie comes to find out that matters of the heart are often a whisper in one's ear and not always a cry out loud.
This book is a very good "soft" read. I have to admit that I was not on the edge of my seat while reading it. In the same respect, I did have a hard time closing the Kindle and walking away to do the laundry. I do recommend this to anyone who wants to relax and go back to a simpler way of life. Growing up around the Amish and their ways, the wording and phrases in the book were not forgein to me. To some one who has not every heard of the Pennsylvania Dutch language, you may have some stumbling blocks. But all and all, a very nice book to kick off the fall season with. Keep up the good work, Ms. Woods. I very much enjoy your story telling and writing style.
